Dear Reader,
These are notes to myself and wonders of my imagination.
The word “limit” is an emotionally charged word, in my experience.
Physical barriers, interior stop gaps, emotional lines in the sand, places where we are forbidden to travel — all denote limits.
Limits are “both/and” territory.
Both boundary and frontier.
Here and beyond.
What is known and what is not known.
Barriers of protection and sites of harm.
Opportunities to rest and to traverse.
Limits are ripe with power & potentiality.
Power is a complex, multi-directional, multi-dimensional force.
What does it feel like to engage in the relational labor of mutuality and reciprocity?
capture (n.)
"act of taking or seizing," 1540s, from French capture "a taking," from Latin captura "a taking" (especially of animals), from captus, past participle of capere "to take, hold, seize" (from PIE root *kap- "to grasp").
At times, I grasp, take hold or reach for knowledge, purpose, ideation, security, or time, itself.
While creating the above painting, I grasped at the shape of a hummingbird and failed.
capture (v.)
"take or seize by force or stratagem," 1779, from capture (n.); in chess, checkers, etc., "win by ingenuity or skill," 1819. Related: Captured; capturing. The earlier verb in this sense was captive (early 15c.).
The grip of capture seizes power over an other.
Capture makes captives of the captured and capturer.
I am bound and indebted to my ancestors & fellow planetary beings.
I am entangled with the natural world.
I am free to breathe into my own body and to know my own mind.
I am free to feel my heart beating in my chest.
I am free to feel into the expanse and limits of my body.
I am free to imagine.
I am bound to failure, ecstasy, grief and death.
I belong.
Unbelonging is a lie of modernity.
How did you learn about time?
Can time be stolen? Possessed?
What are the limitations of counting?
What is in your hands?
How is time always beginning?
